Time Managment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Time Managment - Essay ExampleI definitely hoped that I would pick up some cultivation from this as I definitely did not want to waste time (that would dumbfound been truly ironic if that had happened.I was a tad bit skeptical as the seminar started, but the binder with the learning material caught my eye immediately. To allow oneself to be carried away by a multitude of conflicting concerns, to surrender to likewise galore(postnominal) demands, to commit to too many projects, to want to help allone in everything is itself to succumb to the violence of our times. Frenzy destroys our inner capacity for peace. It destroys the fruitfulness of our work, beca usage it kills the root of inner wisdom which makes work fruitful.1 I was approximately taken aback because this seemed highly philosophical. And much importantly, what if I took on too many projects, all of them were properly scheduled and I made sure every hour of my working day counted. As the day went on I realized that thi s was not just about day planners and to do lists, this was about more than that. Indeed, both day planners and task lists play an important role in time management, but it was important to find out why we wanted to use time efficiently. Indeed if we were saving time what we were saving it for. We certainly could not bank time, so what was the end result there Both managing appointments and keeping to do lists were low hanging fruits. These had to be done anyway. But the purpose of this seminar was to show that there is a lot more to time management. All activities in our living could be put in one of four quadrants. They had to be each imperative and important, urgent and not important, not urgent and important, not urgent and not important. It was not about just getting things done it was getting the things which mattered done. Things which were urgent and important , are emergencies. A good time manager would avoid having too many items in this quadrant. Plan out the important things so that they never become emergencies. Urgent and not important, these are time consuming non critical activities , they either should be ignored or atleast be moved to the back burner. A Ringing phone for example cries for your attention but you are in the lay of an important project. Let the voicemail get it. You can pick up and call all your voicemails at one time later on. Important and not urgent is the quadrant you want all your entire to do list. No emergencies and you are working only important things. Not important and not urgent. These are items which have to be tossed. They serve no purpose at all. After this we briefly went over the POSEC method. POSEC is an acronym. PRIORITIZE-Your time and define your life by goals. ORGANIZING-Things you have to accomplish on a regular basis to be successful. (Family and Finances) STREAMLINING-Things you may not like to do, but must do. (Work and Chores) ECONOMIZING-Things you should do or may even like to do, but theyre not p ressingly urgent. (Past-times and Socializing) CONTRIBUTING-By paying attention to the few remaining things that make a difference. (Social Obligations)2. It was important to learn that managing was not just about managing individual minutes or hours. It was a medium-large meet which was trying to be put together here consisting of numerous small elements. The numerous small elements in themselves meant nothing unless an overall big picture came into place. Continuing on the philosophy of time management , we made a small detour into

Religion in Things Fall A break in - Essay ExampleThe novel is one of the most influential of twentieth-century works of literary works and is considered to be one of the landmark novels in English literature and postcolonial literature. What constitutes a man in the novel can be seen from the description of what constitutes success inside the Igbo tribe, according to Achebe. This would include worldly success as well as the religious ascent. This is indicated through a variety of gestures at heart the novel on the part of the writer and the other members of the society that the novelist is a part of. The idea of the man is thusly derived not only from the material aspects of life but too from the spiritual aspects of it. This can be seen from the fact that Okonkwo is also assigned spiritual responsibilities as a result of the social position that he held. He is assigned the province of taking care of Ikemefuna, something that becomes genuinely important as far as the progress ion of the plot is concerned. Apart from this, the fact that Okonkwo is a part of the Igbo priesthood is also very significant as it points to his position within the spiritual society of the Igbo community. His removal from the priesthood is also accompanied by a fall in his social term and this points towards a connection between religion and society in the material sense of it as far as the Igbo community was concerned. The aim of life in such a society is to regenerate the society itself through a flourishing of human lives. This is what the religion also enjoins as is seen from the high price that it places upon the villainy of murder. The price that Okonkwo has to pay for the one mistake that he makes is enormous. This can also be seen to be a worldview that he shares in when he says, my children do not resemble me. Where are the young suckers that will grow when the old banana tree dies? (Achebe). This emphasis on the regeneration of the society and the urge to see oneself in the future generations can then be seen to be the basis of a social form of religion in Things Fall Apart. These lies are the story of how Okonkwo is unable to be satisfied with his own son and often compares him to his father who he felt was not somebody who had led a productive life. What is true and what is false, is also something that like traditional western religions, do not have their basis entirely in rationality and scientific beliefs. The beliefs that are upheld are often dogmatic and the very nature of the traditional religion supports this kind of an ambiguity in the ways in which religion works within traditional African society. This is then the result of a great many years of ossification of the traditional structures of religion. Such structures are then broken down in the face of colonialism within the novel. As important as an analysis of the traditional structures of the religion is the idea of the changes that were brought about in these ideas of tradition by

The railway system envisioned for the purpose was also better in that it was a high-speed system when compared to both shipping and air transport. Although working for the Channel Tunnel had been on going in the seventies but the real concrete measures came through in 1984. The British and cut governments agreed to common proposals for safety, security and environmental concerns before the project was opened up for bidding. Both governments in 1985 requested the first proposals for the Channel Project. A number of proposals were submitted for the Channel Project. After an evaluation from both the British and French sides, the proposal submitted by Channel Tunnel Group / FranceManche (later Eurotunnel) was accepted. The initial proposal delineated a 32-mile double rail tunnel that was to accommodate passenger trains as well as cargo trains and a special truck and car carrying shuttle service. The initial bid price was set at some $5.5 billion for the entire project. 2.2. Shortage of Time for Planning The initial proposals were submitted in a short time period and this in turn led to many oversights that could have been avoided by detailed studies. When put in a project management perspective, it could be su rmised that high-level founding estimates along with rough order of magnitude estimates could have led to better estimates as to the total scope and cost of the project. The shortage of

Feminism During the 50s Essay Example for Free

Feminism During the 50s EssayThe daybook Revolutionary Road, written by Richard Yates, tells the ref a story almost the life of hotdog and April Wheeler. The Wheelers are a married couple with children who sustain in a 1950s suburb. This essay shows the reader how characters in the book do not conform to characteristic gender roles during this time period and how these gender roles are switched between men and women. The story gives us a lot of insight in to gender roles during the 1950s. However, coarse and April Wheeler do not abide to the typical gender roles of men and women during this time period in American society. The idea of this analysis is to show the reader how Feminism and Masculinity are mental tested in Revolutionary Road. Richard Yates switches gender roles in this novel and does a good business enterprise of showing us a different perspective from what was most common during the 1950s.Revolutionary Road is about weenie and April Wheeler who live in a s uburb called Revolutionary Estates with their two children Jennifer and Michael. They are viewed by their neighbors as your ideal husband and wife. They have a nosy real res publica agent named Mrs. better-lookings who randomly shows up throughout the story and has a deranged son named John who ends up having some conflict with the Wheelers. Mrs. Givings also has a husband named Howard who seems not to care what she has to say most of the time because she is always gossiping or talking too much. in that respect is also a couple, Milly and Shep Campbell who are family friends of the Wheelers and often hang out and drink to acquireher. unmannerly ends up having an affair with Maureen, a woman who works at Knox with him. He ends up feeling guilty about it because April does something special for him. She stops the argument they are in and has a surprise birthday plan for him and tells him about her plans of pitiful their family to Europe. Plans fail however when April realizes she is pregnant and Frank is satisfied that they wont have to move. April ends up having an affair with Shep Campbell who is in love with her secretly. The story ends up with April cleansing herself attempting to do her own abortion from home. Frank lives on in distraught and agony.Richard Yates uses Feminism in the story to show the reader how Frank fits in with typical feminine role of this time and April fits in with thetypical masculine role. Frank is constantly emasculated throughout the story by April. When they realize April is pregnant, she wants to have an abortion. Frank is upset but he cant do much about it because he doesnt have any say in what she does. He tries to say, Listen. Listen to me. You do this you do this and I swear to God Ill and she cuts him off and says, Oh, youll what? Youll leave me? Whats that supposed to be a threat or a promise? (Yates 52) testing his masculinity once again. April is not the typical woman of the 50s and thats why conflicting gender r oles playfulness such an important theme in this novel. Frank thrives off of the need to prove himself to April. He wants her to believe he is in lead of every fact and is the man of the house. He tries to put off this image to April that he is a real man and leads their household. Frank has a lot of conflict throughout the book because of his constant need to prove his manhood and prove his masculinity to April.Richard Yates uses Frank Wheeler to show us just how this novel conflicts the typical gender roles during the 1950s. Yates says about Frank, Wasnt it true, then, that everything in his life from that point on had been a succession of things he hadnt really wanted to do? Taking a cloy job to prove he could be as responsible as any other man Having another child to prove that the first whiz hadnt been a mistake Proving, proving and for no other reason than that he was married to a woman who put him forever on the defensive (Yates 51). Yates shows the reader the true tenac ity of Franks need to prove himself to April day after day. Having a job, having a family, and doing everything to provide for your family were all things men were expected to do during that time in America. Frank has an obsession with needing April to believe he is in control and amply providing for her and their children. He feels she will leave him or step up and provide for them herself is he cannot do it. Frank is trying to prove he is the man and holds the masculine gender role over April. April says in one eyeshot to Frank, Me. Me. Me. Oh, you poor, self-deluded Look at you, Look at you, and tell me how by any stretch of imagination you can call yourself a man ( Yates 28) which really test Franks masculinity. He is without a doubt upset about Aprils actions and words. By receiving her approval, he feels his masculinity and feels he has accomplished what is important. Throughout thestory however, we see that Frank never truly gets the approval from April he is looking for.Y ates intends for Frank to be weaker and less masculine than April. This is how Richard Yates uses conflicting gender roles in his characters. April is a very free lance woman and she will take care of what she feels is necessary. She doesnt look to Frank for guidance and leadership. The vote counter points this out when April is mowing the lawn and Frank is watching her wishing he was doing it. The storyteller states that Frank had planned as soon as hed had some coffee to go out there and take the lawnmower away from April, by force if it was necessary, so the he could restore as much balance to the morning as possible. But he was still in his bathrobe (Yates 40). Frank cannot radix the fact that April is mowing the yard and not letting him do it. Yates gives us a description of April in the yard, he says, It was April herself, stolidly pushing and hauling the old machine, corroding a mans shirt and a pair of loss, flapping slacks (Yates 35) This description of April really giv es the reader a simple understanding that April doesnt need Frank to mow the yard because she is capable and willing to do it herself. These are the things that really bother Frank because he wants a woman who involve him to do everything for her. Thats what Frank feels he is supposed to do he wants to be the sole provider and alpha of his household.Another way we see Frank being emasculated is when April plans the move to Europe. She tells Frank about the plans to move at his surprise birthday get together, he had just got home from having an affair with Maureen from his office. The narrator gives us a good understanding of Franks inability to take control. He ends up agreeing with the plans even though he is not fully sure and confident that is what he wants. Frank says, Darling? We are really going to do it, arent we? I mean it hasnt just been a lot of talk or anything, has it? (Yates 116) and they agree the move to Europe is a sure thing. Then they fall asleep and the chapter e nds with April saying I love you to Frank. Frank is finally feeling a instinct of assurance at this point because things are getting better between him and April. He is finally feeling that sense of satisfaction he thrives for. He and April are gettingalong and things seem to be good. However, April ends up letting Frank in on some blow out of the water news. She is pregnant and when Frank finds out he is actually happy about the news because he has had a promotion offered to him at work and chicanes that having a despoil will keep them from moving. When April realizes Frank is satisfied with not moving she threatens to abort the baby herself after Frank finds her abortion tools and she test Franks masculinity again by saying, And what are you going to do? Do you think youre going to stop me? (Yates 209) when he questions her on what she is going to do with the tools. Frank has no control over any situations throughout this book. Especially in this situation because April has ha d her mind set on moving and she was not going to take no for an answer. She in conclusion kills herself trying to proceed in doing an abortion herself at their home. April had control of the situation the whole time.Furthermore, Revolutionary Road gives the reader a wide and detailed variation of very unusual gender roles for the 1950s. The authors use of feminism helps him to show how Frank is a man who feeds of his wife for satisfaction. Everything Frank does is mainly to get the approval and acceptance of his wife April. Feminism also helps us to take a look at how April Wheeler is portrayed. She is a very independent woman and for this time period that is very rare. Women typically depended on men and did not step up as leaders and sole providers of their family. However, April is much different. She wants Frank to know that she can take care of herself and her family without the help of a man. She is portrayed as being much more masculine and superior than her husband. She i s in control of their descent and she is in control of Franks life. Everything Frank does is based on what April thinks and getting her to notice and her to approve is what makes him feel like a man. Richard Yates did an amazing job in Revolutionary Road by showing the reader the conflicting gender roles of April and Frank Wheeler.Works CitedYates, Richard. Revolutionary Road. 2nd. Gambling addiction Essay Example for Free

Gambling addiction EssayThe text states that the one business in gambling has visibly endured is cognise as chore gambling. Government officials have long demanded a solution from shimmer operators to address this major issue. Too many issues go along with problem gambling such as crime, family and work problems, and financial damage. Fortunately, the gaming industry as a whole has sought to be proactive in combatting the issue. They feared cosmos viewed in the same light as the tobacco or firearm industry by ignoring major problems with their products. Are the steps that they have dish outn enough, or is gambling in general a major threat to society that should be avoided? The American Psychiatric Association refers to problem gambling as pathologic gambling. There are generally speaking two different types of problem gamblers action problem gamblers and escape problem gamblers. Gambling addiction is just as valid of an illness as addiction to alcohol or drugs. Its preval ence is linked directly to the ease of access of gambling in our society. However, just the alike(p)s of drugs and alcohol, only a small percentage of the cosmos is prone to this illness.Gambling addicts in general either lose all of their money, accumulate massive debt, file cabinet for bankruptcy, and in the worst cases commit suicide because they are hopeless. What steps has the gaming industry taken to prevent these horrible outcomes? I spoke to my long-time friend Alan Erskine, who straight off works as the Public Affairs Coordinator at the American Gaming Association in Washington D. C. I needed to buzz off out if they were pickings appropriate precautions to prevent these people from self-destruction.He assured me that, The gaming industry has made many contributions to curbing problem gambling. The first is the creation of the National fondness for Responsible Gaming, which is the largest funder of scholarly studies on how to best curb addiction. The industry also make s various efforts to educate customers about possible negative effects of gambling. This includes posting signs more(prenominal) or less the casino floor, advertising the problem gambling hotline and ensuring customers are not intoxicated while gambling. I was glad to hear that they were this proactive, but is it enough? The National meaning for Responsible Gaming is the only national organization exclusively devoted to funding research to enhance the takeing of pathological gambling. They also search to find effective methods of treatment for the disorder and work to improve prevention, diagnostics, intervention and educating the public about responsible gaming. However, if gambling is the root of the issue to begin with, is it worth expanding gaming in our society? Is educating people really enough to curb the issue? There are countless organizations to prevent drug and alcohol addiction, but the problem still persists. Some critics of legalized gambling would argue that it is the direct cause of the increase in problem gambling and that any of their efforts are just reactive in order to protect their own interests. Alan Erskine responded to this claim stating, The industry recognizes that a small segment of the population cannot gamble safely. Studies have shown that about one percent of the population cannot gamble safely. His response does hold water. The mental disorder of pathological gambling does affect only a small portion of the population. Should the rest of society be restricted just because there are some who cant gamble responsibly? The same case could be made for alcohol. Only a small percentage of people are alcoholics. The rest of the population should not be prohi turninged to drink just because a select few cannot hairgrip it responsibly. All the industry can do is provide outlets for people to get help, and educate the public on the dangers of its abuse. The NCRG has yielded very helpful results in order to understand the nature of the psychological disorder. These include statistics on the scope of people affected, more effective treatment options, the role of genetics, and new instruments to measure, screen and diagnose pathological gambling. The more we understand about how this pathological disorder works, the more we can do to diagnose and treat it before the victim gets themselves and others into serious trouble. In conclusion, it is a bit of a cop out to simply blame the gaming industry for the rise in gambling addiction. They have been extremely proactive in hard to curb the issue and bring it to public eye. Even though they didnt want to be viewed in the same light as other industries like tobacco, alcohol and firearms, it seems inevitable that they would be grouped together. They all provide goods and services that some can enjoy responsibly and others become addicted to and harm themselves or others. Research has consistently pointed out that addiction to gambling produces the same reactions in the brai n that you would find from drug and alcohol addiction. However, they should be distinguished from these industries in the detail that they have donated a great deal of time and resources in order to find ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat this pathological disorder. While the acceptance of gambling in society does allow an outlet for those who can become addicted, the vast majority of people have proven they can do responsibly and the industry continues to take significant steps in order help those who suffer from gambling addiction.
